FAA investigating helicopter crash in south Fort Myers

The Federal Aviation Administration has taken over the investigation of a private helicopter crash that happened in south Fort Myers Saturday evening, the Iona McGregor Fire District reported.

The National Transportation Safety Board also will help with the investigation and will provide additional updates, according to FAA on Sunday. The helicopter currently remains at its crash site. 

The private helicopter was carrying a crew working to set up communication systems in the wake of Hurricane Ian. FAA said the helicopter struck a light tower and crashed around 6:30 p.m. behind the Iona McGregor fire station on Pine Ridge Road in south Fort Myers.

Four people were aboard the helicopter and were sent to the hospital, the fire department reported. The department did not have any updates on the status or injuries of the passengers Sunday. 

Fire crews were able to respond immediately, the department reported on Facebook. A small fire also was put out.
