HOLLAND, MI - Those who know the landmarks along Holland’s shoreline might notice something familiar when they are browsing Hallmark’s new holiday ornaments.

Holland’s Big Red lighthouse served as the inspiration for a brand new Christmas tree ornament titled “Holiday Lighthouse 2022,″ according to the Holland Sentinel. The ornament was crafted by artist Tracy Larsen, according to Hallmark, and it is priced at $27.99 on Hallmark’s website.

According to the Sentinel, the company and Larsen confirmed that the lighthouse was what inspired the design. The Sentinel reported that Larsen said that the details of the lighthouse are based on the Holland structure.

According to the lighthouse ornament’s description on Hallmark’s website, the ornament features a flashing beacon in the tower and soft, glowing lights that emanate from the lighthouse keeper’s home’s windows.

The ornament also features a cheery Santa on a sled and a polar bear dressed as a reindeer standing outside the lighthouse in the snow.

The ornament is part of Hallmark’s 2022 Keepsake Ornament collection. The lighthouse ornament was released during Hallmark’s Christmas in July Keepsake Ornament Premiere during July 9 - 17.

“The Keepsake Ornament line debuted nearly 50 years ago, and Hallmark is proud to continue offering unique, specialty ornaments that spark connection and celebrate togetherness,” said Nicole Reid, vice president of ornaments, gifts and specialty retail at Hallmark. “From celebrating longstanding traditions to helping families create new ones, Keepsake Ornament Premiere is a great time to share in the merriment of the holiday season with loved ones.”

Other ornaments from the collection include fan favorites from movies and TV shows, such as E.T. and Star Wars.

The first lighthouse along Holland’s harbor was built in the 1870s as a wooden structure, but it was replaced by a steel lighthouse several years later. MLive previously reported that the Big Red structure was built to house a coal-powered steam whistle at the site, when mariners realized the need for a loud noise to guide them when fog rolled in.

The Big Red lighthouse was electrified in the 1930s and it obtained its iconic red color when the Coast Guard painted it red in 1956 to satisfy a new navigational requirement.

The Coast Guard intended to abandon the lighthouse in 1971, but a group of Holland residents teamed up to form the Holland Harbor Historical Lighthouse Commission, as previously reported by MLive.
