10 Disney Villains And One Quote That Goes Against Their Personality

The Disney villains have a number of memorable quotes to their names. But sometimes the odd line actually goes against their scheming personalities.

As some of the most beloved characters from the House of Mouse, the Disney villains have many memorable and iconic lines within their respective movies. They may be cartoons, but these characters have depth, so there is the occasional line of dialogue that actually goes against the villain's lovably loathsome personality.

More often than not, these contradictory lines are part of a cunning plan to fool, please, or even openly mock the protagonists in plain sight. But sometimes, these lines are blurted out in an act of cowardice and a selfish attempt to reason with the protagonist as to why they should not be punished.

Captain Hook is one of Disney's most famous villains, and arguably the most iconic version of the J.M. Barrie character. In Disney's Peter Pan, Captain Hook may be foppish and comedic but he still often proves himself to be a ruthless and merciless villain, especially when Peter Pan is involved.

However, when Peter bests him at a fight, all of that flies out of the window as he tearfully begs for him to spare his life. This moment portrays him in an extremely pitiful and pathetic light, a far cry from the suave villainous pirate that viewers know and love.

As one of the most powerful Disney villains of all time, Maleficent has certainly made her mark not just in the House of Mouse but in popular culture overall. She is cold, cruel, and openly calls herself the mistress of all evil.

So, when taken out of context, this quote about true love seems extremely out of character for the wicked sorceress, even for her live-action counterpart played by Angelina Jolie. Yet this moment is actually to mock Prince Phillip about rescuing Aurora, which makes a lot more sense. In fact, right after this quote follows a signature villainous laugh.

Even before her recent live-action origin story, Cruella de Vil has been one of Disney's greatest and most legendary villains to date. With her tastes in high fashion and fur and her haughty attitude towards others, Cruella is truly a modern-day villain.

Unsurprisingly, Cruella is a selfish individual and will stop at nothing to get what she wants, including buying Dalmatian puppies minutes after they are born for their fur. In an attempt to entice Roger and Anita in accepting, Cruella writes a check, saying she is being "more than generous." The line goes against her nature because Cruella is a character that is always anything but generous, selfish reasons or not.

The octopoid sea witch Ursula is from Disney's The Little Mermaid, one of the latest Disney movies to receive the live-action treatment. Here, Ursula manages to convince Ariel to sell her voice in exchange for becoming a human as part of her devious plan to rule the seas.

As part of her legendary Disney villain song "Poor Unfortunate Souls", Ursula claims to help "unfortunate merfolk" out of the goodness of her heart. However, viewers know that this is far from the truth. Ursula is not the selfless sea witch that she says she is and always expects something in return. Unfortunately, that has cost many merfolk before Ariel.

Boorish, arrogant, and misogynistic, Gaston starts Beauty and the Beast by simply being a selfish and eager suitor for Belle. However, Gaston becomes more villainous as the movie goes on, going as far as having her father committed into an asylum for Belle's hand in marriage.

So this is why the above quote really goes against Gaston's personality. It implies that he likes and cares for Belle's father, as well as Belle's own feelings. However, this is clearly an attempt to get on Belle's good side by acting as though he cares for her and her family.

Jafar is the proud and scheming royal vizier in Disney's Aladdin, secretly plotting to take over Agrabah. He briefly succeeds, with his climactic battles making him one of Disney's scariest villains.

Yet before he could put his plan into play, Jafar must pretend to be the humble and loyal vizier to the Sultan, even if he despises him. What's more, Jafar is hubristic and arrogant, believing others should be below him, including the Sultan. With these factors in mind, it is fair to say that this above line, even though it's a lie, really goes against Jafar's nature.

Scar was rather clear that he loathed his older brother, Mufasa. His hatred for him was not only fuelled when Simba was born but passed on to his nephew, as it claimed his place in line for the throne. This hatred was so strong that he was willing to kill his own flesh and blood to take over the pride.

Yet, in a clear moment of cowardice, Scar has the nerve to plead "I'm family!" when a fully-grown Simba finally has him cornered and confronted. Family clearly never mattered to Scar before, so it certainly shouldn't have mattered to him then. He was only lucky Sumba was merciful.

Hades, the smooth-talking silver-tongued Lord of the Underworld, is notable for being an intentionally funny Disney villain. What he is also noteworthy for is his extremely firey and destructive temper.

One memorable example of this is learning that Hercules could potentially ruin his plot to take over Olympus. After a brief yet explosive tantrum over this, Hades quickly reassures himself "I'm cool!" to calm down. Of course, fans know that Hades is anything but cool and collected in regards to his temper.

Also known as the Shadow Man, the charismatic Dr. Facilier is the one responsible for transforming Naveen (and ultimately Tiana) into a frog. In fact, with his abilities and help from his "friends on the other side", Facilier is arguably a formidable and powerful Disney villain.

Yet there's one factor that cuts short his power and that is he cannot conjure anything for himself. As a result, the above line not only reveals a weakness of Facilier but goes against his personality because it reveals how he does need to rely on help from others, even though he is rather individualistic by nature.

With her motherly facade hiding her cruelty and selfish intentions, Gothel should really be a detestable villain. Yet with her charm, charisma, and the catchy number "Mother Knows Best", it's difficult to completely hate her.

Yet whilst memorable, the lyrics of "Mother Knows Best" could arguably go against her personality, particularly the above lyrics. Gothel claims to love and care for Rapunzel's wellbeing. Yet viewers know all too well that Gothel only really cares about the rejuvenating magic in Rapunzel's hair.
